Using the temperature programming capability of the PM 1 and the TDS, samples can be thermally desorbed prior to pyrolysis, in order to remove interfering volatiles and get a cleaner pyrolysis GC/MS analysis. This means that more and better information can be obtained from a single sample. First a Thermal Desorption GC/MS run is performed in order to get information on residual monomers and/or solvents in the sample. Secondly, the pyrolysis GC/MS analysis is performed with best possible results.

The TDS can be converted from pyrolysis to thermal desorption analysis in just a few minutes.

The GERSTEL Pyrolysis Module (PM 1) is easily and conveniently controlled from the MAESTRO Software – stand alone or through the Agilent Technologies ChemStation software.

During conditioning in the TC 2, TD tubes are either held at a user-specified fixed temperature or undergo a specified temperature program cycle while being purged with inert gas to efficiently remove contaminants. Up to 5 Twisters will fit into an empty TDS tube, allowing up to 50 Twisters to be conditioned in one batch. Each tube has independent gas flow regulation enabling the conditioning of one to ten tubes without the need to adjust flows.

The TC 2 helpds to ensure that conditioned TD tubes and Twisters are always available providing best possible quality of analysis.

The TDS is mounted on top of a Cooled Injection System (CIS) that is used as cryotrap, focusing and concentrating the components to be determined, and then transferring them to the capillary column in split- or splitless mode without analyte discrimination or loss of analytes. With the addition of the TDS-A Autosampler, the TDS becomes a fully automated thermal desorption system capable of unattended analysis of up to 20 samples.

The TDS G On-Line version enables whole-air sampling as well as direct sampling of gas streams for continous on-line monitoring.
